Lake and river activities The lake offers great opportunities for all kinds of water sports such as sailing, kayaking, sight-seeing cruises, and swimming. A lot of operators offer guided tours or rental possibilities.
Cultural experiences Taupo offers cultural experiences that provide an insight into the customs and traditions of the indigenous people of New Zealand. Maori Heritage Tours offer a personal local tour of Taupo, sharing knowledge about the Ngati Tuwharetoa Maori, the Maori tribe in the Taupo area, their region and their history. The Wairakei Terraces let you discover a Maori village with tribal songs and dance, legends, myths, and a traditional 'hangi' meal.
Adventure activities There is an endless list of adrenalin activities available in Taupo: bungy jumping; skydiving; helicopter mountain biking; mountain biking; rock climbing; caving; rafting; kayaking; jet boating; parasailing, etc.
Walks There are several short walks on easy, clearly marked tracks in the Taupo area. Many, less known but also mostly well marked tracks and hiking and walking opportunities are within one or two hour's drive. We will be happy to give you the information you need for these.
Geothermal With Taupo being situated in the Central Plateau, a volcanic zone, there are numerous options to explore thermal activity. There are various parks giving the opportunity to have a close look at natural hot springs; geysers; boiling mud pools; hot pools and some of the largest silica terraces in the world.
Spa, Massage, Hot Pools Taupo has a hot spring complex offering bathing in hot mineral pools and spa treatments such as massages and facials. There is also a natural hot pool in the Waikato River at Spa Park and some areas at the lake side have very comfortable temperatures.
Airborne experiences Enjoy amazing views of the Lake Taupo Region, Tongariro National Park or go as far as White Island. Scenic flights are offered by (float) plane and helicopter, which we can book for you.
Skiing & Snowboarding New Zealand's largest ski field is situated only a 1½ hours drive from Taupo. You'll be skiing on one of the volcanoes of Tongariro National Park: Mount Ruapehu. The ski season normally goes from around June until October, although some years the mountain has been open until December!
Horse trekking Horse treks are available for experienced riders and novices, offering a personalized trip through Taupo's native bush and hills. Several options are available and gourmet lunch can be included.
Shopping Visitors will find the shops in Taupo many and varied, offering things from New Zealand art to fishing gear. Many shops are open 7 days a week. |
